8-year-old boy saves drowning girl in Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD, Mass. (WHDH) -- An 8-year-boy lauded as a hero. Jessica Levassuer was teaching her son Devin how to swim at Freeman Lake Thursday night-until he made a shocking discovery.

“I saw her,” said Devin, “the little girl, floating. And I thought she was trying to float on her back.”

“Mom, he says, I want to learn how to float like that,” said Jessica Levassuer.

Instead, what he saw was a three-year-old girl lying lifeless, face up in the water.

“I started running towards her,” said Levassuer, “and then I see one last like, bubble come out of her mouth.”

Levassuer said she scooped the limp girl up, and brought her to shore. The three-year-old then began to spit up water and cry.

According to police, the girl's mother said she left her daughter in ankle-deep water for a minute or two.

“This lady EMT said, ‘you were very lucky to have got her when you did.’”

But the Lowell mom said her son Devin was the one responsible for spotting her.

When Devin was asked if he was a hero now, he pointed to his mother, “She is.”

“You are,” said Jessica Levassuer.

Devin said he aspires to be a police officer to help people…as well as other perks.

“I want to be a cop because the cops like donuts, and I like donuts too.”

Police said the girl's vitals seemed fine, but she was taken to the hospital for observation.
