SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Springfield police have arrested a suspect in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a 19-year-old pregnant mother and seriously injured the daughter she was pushing in a stroller.
Authorities said Monday that 35-year-old Springfield resident Michael Wingfield faces charges including motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
Police say a Springfield woman, Ashley Ballester, was pushing her daughter Lailani in a stroller across a street Friday night when a car hit her and drove away.
Authorities said a second car then ran over the mom, but the 23-year-old Westfield woman driving that vehicle stopped and doesn't face criminal charges.
Ballester's daughter, who turns 2 this week, is hospitalized in an intensive care unit.
