Cat goes to vet for flea bath but gets euthanized
GARDNER, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Gardner woman says her cat went to the veterinarian for a flea bath but was mistakenly put to death.
Colleen Conlon and her family are grieving the loss of 8-year-old Lady, which she attributes to negligence by the vet, Dr. Muhammad Malik.
According to the vet’s attorney, the animal hospital received two phone calls; one from a woman who wanted her cat to have a flea bath, another was from a man who wanted his cat to be euthanized. Then, Conlon’s 24-year-old son, Jesse Conway, showed up to the Broadway Animal Hospital with Lady.
Conway unknowingly authorized the cat to be put to sleep after he says he was given the wrong forms.
“Prior to making this appointment, we had talked in great detail about the plan of care to get rid of the fleas” said Jesse Conway.
Conway says he even called the office 15 minutes ahead of time to confirm the appointment for Lady’s flea bath two weeks ago. When he arrived, he says Dr. Malik asked him to fill out paper work.
“I wasn’t expecting to sign euthanasia papers. I was expecting to fill out registration forms,” Conway said.
Signing his signature is now Conway’s big regret.
“If he would’ve even asked, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ or, ‘What’s wrong with her?’ or, ‘So you definitely want to put this cat to sleep?’ anything. It would’ve been the red flag,” Conway said.
Instead, when Conway returned to pick up Lady, Dr. Malik asked if he was there to pick up Lady’s remains.
“I asked him over and over again, ‘You really put my cat down?’ and the only answers I got were, ‘I already put her down and you signed these papers,’” Conway said.
“The gentleman filled out the form in its entirety and he signed it. And obviously, for the cat to be euthanized,” said Michael Sheridan, Dr. Malik’s attorney.
Dr. Malik’s attorney says the vet did ask Conway about Lady and the disposal of her body beforehand.
“I loved that cat. I miss her terribly,” said Conlon.
Conlon and Conway say they’ve contacted the state attorney general’s office.
