WESTBOROUGH, Mass. (WHDH) -- Family, friends and neighbors gathered Saturday for an emotional candlelight vigil in memory of Lizzi Marriott, the UNH student who went missing this past week.
“I want to thank everyone for so many things, but most important, for helping Lizzi turn into the most amazing person,” said Robert Marriott, Lizzi’s father.
In Lizzi Marriott’s small hometown of Westborough, many are trying to make sense of this unthinkable tragedy and come to terms with the past week.
“It’s been really tough. When I first found out about Lizzi, you know, it was devastating to hear that this happened. It’s just unbelievable. Nobody expected it, it’s just a tragedy,” said family friend, Curtis Sciba.
Lizzi's best friend, who first realized something was wrong, fought back tears as she helped light candles.
The emotional energy was felt by all.
“It’s quiet, it’s subdued, but you can just feel the energy,” said family friend, Jamie Sciba.
“You hope for the best, but you kind of know what might have gone on and unfortunately it was what everybody feared,” said Dwayne Redfern.
“When we heard the news it just hit really hard,” said highschool classmate, Eloise Marin. “She hung out with everyone and she wasn’t mean to anyone. She was always really passionate about what she wanted to do. She was always there for everyone.”
Many noted the family's bravery for attending the vigil.
“Together we created an angel and she is home in heaven,” said Marriott.
There are no plans for a funeral or memorial while the family awaits results from the ongoing investigation.
