Weston Observatory busy after 4.0-M earthquake

WESTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- Seismographs stayed busy at the Weston Observatory where scientists are calling Tuesday night’s earthquake moderate sized.

The tremors were felt all across New England and even some places in eastern New York.

Experts at the Weston Observatory say while the USGS put the magnitude at 4.0, that number could change as they get more information. Now they’re keeping an eye on aftershocks.

“We can expect small aftershocks -- magnitude threes and twos -- to continue for some time. It’s hard to say [how long] but that tail can be very long. It can be out for months,” said Dr. Mike Hagerty.

Experts say it is the strongest earthquake centered in New England in six years.

“There was a 4.2 in Bar Harbor in Maine in 2006. It gives you some idea, it’s not an everyday occurrence but it’s not completely unusual either,” Dr. Hagerty said. “We have small earthquakes going on all the time and nobody’s aware of it.”

For some who felt the shaking Tuesday night, it brought back memories of a quake centered in Virginia felt in New England last summer.

“It’s funny because we had an earthquake last year in August too. And I felt that too. It doesn’t happen that much in New England I guess,” one man said.

MEMA says there are no reports of damage.
