NORTHBORO, Mass. (WHDH) -- Three children were found in good condition after they were lost on the Jubilee Trail in Northboro.
The search for three young boys missing along the trail in Northboro began around noon on Wednesday.
“In the grand scheme of the area, it’s a small geographical area, so as far as being lost in the woods, that wasn’t the greater concern to us. It was the temperature and the weather, couple of small bodies of water in the area with curious boys,” said Lt. William Lyver, Northboro Police Department.
A cousin from Chicago and two brothers from town decided to run ahead of their parents, take a short cut, and surprise them. But instead, they surprised themselves.
"After about 15 minutes of going into the woods they realized they were no longer on the trail. They tried to get back, but instead of staying put in one place, they continued to walk and tried to find the trailhead again and were unsuccessful," said Lt. Lyver.
The State Police Air Wing was called in along with K9's and searchers on the ground. One of the boys was found 2.5 hours later wandering on the side of a road. The other two were spotted from the air. All three were medically checked out before returning home.
“They were dressed appropriately for the weather for no snow on the ground. They were wearing sneakers obviously which is not the best footwear for the occasion, but it was going to be a short family hike on a relatively short trail that ended up being a little longer than anticipated,” said Lt. Lyver.
Police told the three boys they should stick together next time something like that happens.
