PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (WHDH) -- A multi-alarm fire broke out at a five-story apartment complex in Portsmouth, New Hampshire just before 7 Friday night.
Crews raced to put out the blaze that started in the chimney of the complex and quickly spread to the ceiling and attic space, then to some third-floor apartments.
Firefighters had trouble reaching the building which is located on Portsmouth’s waterfront and locked in by other buildings.
“It’s pretty chaotic. I mean, all through the State Street, as you can hear right now the sirens, you can see fire trucks just lined up. Those hoses stretching for what seemed like miles,” a witness said.
It appeared everyone was evacuated and accounted for, according to fire investigators. Multiple towns assisted in the firefight. Crews were still one scene at about 11 p.m. attempting to put out the fire.
Investigators did not immediately say what caused the fire.
No injuries were reported.
