Plum Island homes battered by wind and snow

PLUM ISLAND (WHDH) -- As the storm picks up force, the ocean is becoming a bigger threat to coastal homes in Plum Island.

Sustained winds have reached 45-50 miles per hour.

A man who lives on the shore said his deck was destroyed by the last storm. The homeowner said the extension is in danger of collapsing and if it does they will have to leave the home.

Crews have been putting up sand barriers around homes along the coast to make sure they get as much protection as they can, but the relentless waves have worn down the barriers.

The state senator said the National Guard brought about 60 tons of sand onto Plum Island, donated by the MBTA in Somerville.

The National Guard is in town for training this weekend, so there are 5,000 guardsmen and women in the area.

There are reports that more than 11,000 homes have lost power.

The great concern is high tide came in at 10 p.m. Crews said there was a possibility the road would flood, but as of 10:30 p.m., it was still intact. The major concern is high tide Saturday morning.
