SUV lands upright against Methuen house
METHUEN, Mass. (WHDH) -- A wild ride ended with an SUV upright against home’s second-story deck in Methuen.
“My first thought was Universal Studios. Kind of like one of those things that you see, nothing you see in a Methuen neighborhood,” said Robin Benshimol, Methuen resident.
Methuen police say it began when the driver's wife called 911 Tuesday afternoon to ask for help with her husband, who was possibly under the influence of drugs.
But when police arrived, they say he had just taken off in his neighbor's SUV.
“The officers went his last known direction of travel, and well, in 40 seconds, located the car,” said Lt. Michael Pappalardo, Methuen Police Department.
Police say it didn't take long for them to find the SUV once it came barreling down East Street and landed on the second floor of the home.
The driver, a 39-year-old man who lives just down the street, slammed into a fence before finally coming to an almost vertical stopping point on the deck.
“And I’m looking over there, thinking it's just a little accident but the car was on the back porch so it was crazy,” said Benshimol.
The man then jumped down and ran off before a police dog found him lying face down and bloody in a nearby marsh.
“I said that's something you don't see every day,” said Lt. Pappalardo said.
Police say thankfully, no one was hurt except the driver, who was taken to the hospital. The investigation is still underway as they consider possible charges.
