SUV slams into front window of Fitness Together
BEVERLY, Mass. (WHDH) -- An SUV barreled through a fitness center filled with clients and personal trainers Wednesday night when the operator of the car slammed through the front window of the Fitness Together, just missing a man on a treadmill.
“This is Aaron calling from 950 Cummings Center, Fitness Together. We had a car vehicle drive through our window, I'm not sure if the passenger is okay,” said a Fitness Together employee.
Beverly Police said the 46-year-old woman driving the vehicle told them that her flip-flop got stuck under the gas pedal. The car slammed through the building before it stopped. Employees from the restaurant next door jumped no action to make sure that everybody was okay.
“There was a ton of debris on the ground, glass everywhere. The railings got bent in so they were all over the place. Just a bunch of debris from the building,” said Alex Tracey who helped rescue the driver.
He was working next door when he heard what he described as a loud boom.
“We ran over to the SUV, it was a dark SUV, we pulled open the back door. There was a lady sitting in there. She just looked really dazed and confused, really out of it,” said Tracey.
Cell phone video shows emergency workers pulling the SUV out of the building.
“I’m at a loss of words really. It's, it's, you know you hear the cliché, miraculous, but there was a gentleman on the treadmill and he is okay. It's crazy,” said Derek Maxfield owner of the Fitness Together studio.
Police said it all happened because the driver was wearing flip flops.
“Her flip flop got caught on the gas pedal and that’s what caused the car to accelerate into the building,” said Mike Boccuzzi of the Beverly Police Department.
The owner of the gym is trying to get everything fixed as quickly as possible.
Police said the driver isn't expected to face any charges and that it was simply a freak accident.
