Police searching for armed robber in Swampscott
SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. (WHDH) -- Police are searching for an armed robber on the run after he held up a Gap store in Swampscott and is allegedly responsible for another robbery earlier this week.
An armed guard now patrols the Gap store.
“It's a little bit unnerving, the children and I were wondering why the police were around,” said shopper Diana Uhrich.
Surveillance video shows a man oddly dressed like one of the mannequins, walking casually through the store. Police said he had just pulled off an armed robbery.
“Light skinned Hispanic or African American male walked in. He flashed a gun and demanded money,” said Sgt. Tim Cassidy of Swampscott Police,
Police won't say how much he got, but he took off on foot.
A similar robbery happened only a few days prior, at an Olympia Sports.
A man who matched the description, in long pants and a long sleeved shirt, walked up to the counter, flashed a gun and got cash.
“Swampscott, Marblehead, you expect something else, but let's face it, robbery is universal. It's everywhere,” said Robert Smythe a local shopper.
Police are hoping the public can provide tips. Until then, shoppers are wary.
“Normally a place that feels very safe feels a little unsafe right now,” said Susan Booras shopper.
Police said the man is in his early 30s with a slim build. In each case the man initially fled on foot but he may have had a bike as well.
