Man shot and killed in struggle with Lynn police
LYNN, Mass. (WHDH) -- A woman said to be the girlfriend of a man shot by Lynn Police devastated and searching for answers.
The victim died Thursday after being shot in the abdomen.
Neighbors say he was a veteran.
“My understanding is he's an Iraqi war veteran up until last year I used to see him on Sunday nights in his fatigues and dropping his gear,” Wayne Spates, a neighbor, said.
Police say they received a report late Thursday morning of a man acting strangely outside an apartment complex in Lynn.
“He was swearing at someone inside of a vehicle and then the car sped off,” Kheysha Torres said.
Officers ended up the man's townhouse.
“A physical struggle ensued, during the struggle, that individual was able to get the firearm of one of the police officers,” Lynn Police Chief Kevin Coppinger said. Neighbors describe hearing three shots soon after police went in the home.
“I just saw the cops at his door and I know he didn’t want to let them in and they made their way in and then not even a minute later you heard shots fired it was so quick,” Mariessa Lopez said.
Investigators collected evidence into the night. Neighbors said the victim lived at the home with his girlfriend and children. They say he never showed a violent side.
The Essex County Distract Attorney is investigating the incident. The three officers involved with the shooting have been taken off duty as is common with a case like this.
