Voice coach accused of getting teen pregnant
HAVERHILL, Mass. (WHDH) -- Joshua Garsteck, 32, of Haverhill has been charged with aggravated statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl. Police say the pair had a long term sexual relationship and that she became pregnant.
According to a police report there is significant information that the girl's mother "knew of the relationship...and that she intentionally impeded the police and DCF investigation."
Police also say Garsteck was the alleged victim's voice coach at the DeAngelis Music Studio in Haverhill.
According to the police report the victim said starting in late 2012, her relationship with Garsteck "...progressed from a student/teacher relationship...to a sexual relationship," when she was 13 years old and that "she stayed over at his house on a regular basis."
After police began their investigation in late May, they found text messages between Garsteck, the girl and her mother talking about them "needing to get all of the victim's things out of his apartment and having to stop contact with each other."
Police say "the victim was extremely uncooperative and defiant" at first. However, she eventually admitted everything to police when she was in the hospital in early October.
Garsteck was fired from his job at the music school and is being held on $50,000 bail. The victim delivered her baby this week; both are now in the custody of her father. The investigation is ongoing.
