Man pleads not guilty in fatal Haverhill stabbing
HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) -- A 21-year-old Haverhill man is held without bail after pleading not guilty to a fatal stabbing.
The Essex district attorney's office says Philip Lucas Defusco was arraigned on a murder charge Thursday in Haverhill District Court.
Twenty-five-year-old Derric Gaines was found with several stab wounds at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in front of a High Street home.
Prosecutor John DePaulo said police arrested Defusco after hearing from two witnesses. One said she saw two men fighting in a white car around 8 p.m., then one man ran and the other chased him. DePaulo said when she heard a man died, she gave police a description of the car. DePaulo said another woman said she thought her stepson was involved in a stabbing and her car had blood in it. He said the car matched the other witness's description.
