Danvers teen charged as adult in teacher's murder
DANVERS, Mass (WHDH) -- Less than one day after Danvers High math teacher Colleen Ritzer was allegedly murdered by her 14-year-old student Phillip Chism community members gathered at a vigil in her honor.
“She was really nice, even when some of us weren’t listening,” one student said.
Danvers High School, where the murder took place, was closed after her body was discovered early Wednesday morning, was closed on Wednesday and will remain closed Thursday.
Chism, the suspect, appeared in Salem District Court where he was charged as an adult with murder.
Students say Ritzer asked Chism to stay after school Tuesday, and that is when police believe she was killed.
Blood was found in a second floor bathroom and Ritzer’s body was found in the woods behind the school.
Shortly after this Chism went to a movie theatre then disappeared temporarily. He was found overnight on Route 1 in Topsfield.
“We need to grieve the loss of Colleen but at the same time begin to return our school children with some type of normalcy,” Danvers Police Chief Neil Ouellette
