Mattapan suspect to return to Mass. by next week

BOSTON -- Kimani Washington, 35, of Dorchester appeared before a judge in Manchester, N.H. on Monday answering to charges that link him to last week’s Mattapan murders.
Washington was arrested on Friday night in a Manchester apartment with charges of possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen vehicle, the Ford Edge located by police a couple of miles from the scene of the shootings that left four people dead, including a mother and her 2-year-old son Amani Smith.
On Friday, neighbors describe nearly three dozen US Marshals and police officers surrounding a Manchester apartment complex to arrest Washington.
“They actually made us leave our apartment and go down to the apartment down the hallway for our safety,” said one woman.
Washington walked into the courtroom on Monday with his head hung low, which was a drastic difference from the bravado he showed on Facebook, where Washington wrote: “You tell me why I’m Boston’s most wanted but then 'expletive' ain’t got a warrant. Tell me I ain't the realest 'expletive' living in and outta prison.”
7news also found Washington’s been arrested several times since 1990.
He was caught on surveillance camera cashing counterfeit checks, and for allegedly brutally beating his former girlfriend twice.
Despite all of that, a close friend said police have the wrong guy.
“I don’t believe that he’s a bad person, that he could be capable of something like that,” said the friend.
But for families of the four people killed and one fighting for his life, this is just the beginning of a painful journey.
"Wherever it takes its course, Amani's face will be there, Eyonne's face will be there. That's the reason why I did that," said Theresa Payne, Eyanna's aunt.
The father of five agreed to return to Massachusetts, but in a highly unusual move, officials asked for a week’s time to come and get him.
“The reason for that request sir, for that much time, I know it’s atypical for us to ask for an extradition from Mass. They have some concerns about coordinating advanced security for his transport back, and there’s also some concerns about the availability of his counsel,” said Lt. Robert Cunha of the Manchester, New Hampshire Police Department.
Kimani Washington’s family released a statement about the arrest:
“We hoped the person or persons that committed this senseless crime would be brought to justice and we still feel the same way. Family or not, he needs to be held accountable for his actions in whatever part me may have played.”
Washington is being held at the Hillsborough County jail without bail. Massachusetts officials have until 11 p.m. next Tuesday to get him out of Manchester.
Funerals for the victims begin taking place on Tuesday.
