Newburyport beach plan apparently fails

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. -- Newburyport's attempt to build up a portion of the beach appears to have failed.

The Newburyport Daily News says the town was unsuccessful in saving the beach between 53rd and 57th Streets.

The city purchased and bulldozed tons of sand around the beach as erosion protection, but much of it was quickly washed away by the rainstorm earlier this month.

The sand Newburyport bought was paid for by a $50,000 state grant.
