Suspect robs Borders bookstore in Peabody

PEABODY, Mass. -- Police are investigating an armed robbery at a local store. They say it may have been inspired by the popular book, which was later made into the movie "The Town."
A suspect took a page from the script of Ben Affleck’s bank robbery thriller, “The Town.” But instead of hitting a bank, police say the suspect stole from Borders Bookstore.
“Who robs a bookstore?” said one man.
“People rob anything,” added another man.
Police say witnesses described a man wearing a mask just like the ones the bank robbers had on in Affleck's movie. Police say the masked suspect approached the Borders bookstore on Andover Street around 11:30 Thursday night as four employees were locking up for the night.
According to police, the suspect showed a gun, ordered the employees back inside, where the suspect stole a bag full of cash and took off.
“I’m sure it was terrifying, especially when you’re in the holiday spirit and you’re going home for Christmas. I’m sure it was terrifying,” said Megan English, a Borders customer.
On Friday morning, investigators discovered a torched SUV located in an industrial park on Swampscott Road in Salem. According to Peabody police, the SUV matches the description given by Borders employees, and is likely connected to the crime.
Christmas Eve customers at the bookstore are relieved that none of the employees were hurt.
“It’s sad that people feel they have to go to those lengths for whatever reason,” said Deb Minor, a Borders customer.
“Tough times for everyone. Hopefully people will find better ways to try to make things work,” added a man.
Police believe the burned out SUV may have been stolen from a local dealership, and they are still searching for the suspect.
