Suspect in 5-hour standoff with Revere police

REVERE, Mass. -- A police standoff that lasted five hours left a neighborhood on edge on Tuesday evening.

A 29-year-old man barricaded himself inside the attic of a Dale Street home where he lived with his mother. Police said the FBI was trying to serve the man a warrant following a June bank robbery in Malden.

“I seen the first cruiser come down,” said Joe Martorana. “Then I seen three unmarked vehicles come in and they tried to get in the house.”

The man refused to come out of the home and he threatened to shoot, prompting several other agencies to report to the scene including SWAT teams and Boston Police’s tactical unit.

Officials said they tried to talk the suspect out using a cell phone, but the phone’s battery died. The suspect’s family and a hostage negotiator also tried to talk him out of the home, but their attempts failed. Police then had to intervene.

“The joint task force attempted to serve the warrant on this residence,” said Capt. James Guydo of the Revere Police Department. “The suspect was in the home, attempted to do a…warrant arrest. At the time, the suspect stated that he had a weapon and he wasn’t going to come out.”

No shots were fired in the incident. The suspect was eventually arrested and taken away in an ambulance.
