Tailgating tragedy victim's name released
SALEM, Mass. -- Police have released the name of a Massachusetts woman killed in a tailgating tragedy at Saturday’s Yale-Harvard football game.
Nancy Barry, a 31-year-old from Salem, was among those struck by a U-Haul truck when it accelerated into a crowd. She was pronounced dead at a New Haven hospital Saturday morning.
Police say the driver in Saturday’s accident was sober when his truck accelerated into the crowd. In a statement through his lawyer, the 19-year-old from New Haven said the truck malfunctioned, causing the accident.
Neighbors of the victim and tailgaters at the game were shocked and saddened by the tragedy.
“It’s just very sad, very sad. You know, everyone is drinking out there, it happens, but it’s a sad thing,” Ian McDonald said.
Harvard University had banned U-Hauls from tailgating parties years ago unlike Yale. However, students said the rules are not to blame.
“It was just tragic, it’s just tragic. You know, she goes off to enjoy a beautiful football day and can’t make it home,” said a neighbor.
Neighbors left condolences on Barry’s door at her downtown Salem condo complex.
The 1999 Salem High School grad had owned the unit downtown for four years.
She had gone to the football game with friends Saturday when the truck lost control in the parking lot and struck Barry and two others.
“I just looked around, saw people on the ground, saw them trying to resuscitate a girl,” said Alan Cowes, a Yale Student.
The crash was witnessed by other tailgaters who continued to party while police investigated the accident.
Later at the game, a moment of silence was observed in Barry’s honor.
Her neighbors said they still can’t believe she is gone.
“It sounded like it was just a freak accident and that’s what that means, it’s an accident and all the people here, their hearts go out to the family and the friends,” said Barry’s neighbor.
A Yale student and a Harvard staffer were also injured. Investigators are still trying to determine whether charges should be filed against the driver.
