SAUGUS, Mass. (WHDH) -- Saugus High School officials have set a strict dress code for prom this year.
Prom season is starting, and Saugus High School is setting some strict guidelines to make sure students look proper at the event.
"I heard you can't have like slits in your dress, you can't have a strapless dress, it can't be anything revealing," said Ashley Costa, Saugus High School sophomore.
For boys it's button shirts all night. The rules leave nothing to chance, and if you're caught breaking them, you could get in trouble.
“We'd get sent home if we don't. So it's like you have to obey them," Costa said.
Some students think the dress code isn't a problem.
“You're not supposed to have an open back or anything but I don't think that's really an issue because there are dresses that you can find without that," said Amy Sideri, Saugus High School senior.
But other prom-goers aren't too happy with the plan.
"It's really strict. It’s the prom. I don't see the problem in wearing like a strapless dress. It's just a dress," Costa said.
And there is one more concern about the fashion dos and don’ts.
"The only problem would be if you already had a dress before you found out about the dress code," Sideri said.
"Most people already got their dresses and you can't return your dress if you got it custom," Costa said.
For students who haven't made a purchase -- one mother feel's if adults help with the shopping -- the kids should be okay.
"If the parents are involved, hopefully they'll gear their child in the right direction,” said Claudia Sideri, a parent.
Students and parents were all notified of the new policy for the prom --- which is set for May 31.
