NH, Maine, top list for student debt average
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- A nonprofit research group says New Hampshire had the highest average student debt load, followed by Maine at No. 2. Vermont at No. 6.
The Project on Student Debt's sixth annual report found that students who graduated from four-year colleges in New Hampshire in 2010 had an average loan debt of $31,048, followed by Maine at $29,983. Vermont was No. 6 with an average of $28,391. The study, released in December, found high-debt states concentrated in the Northeast and Midwest.
Amanda St. John is one graduate who knows the burden of huge student loans. The 32-year-old York, Maine, native, who works part-time in Portland, tells Maine Today Media she piled up $98,000 in student loans at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt. Her $20 monthly payments don't even cover the interest.
