Shirley man accused of killing girlfriend on trial
WOBURN, Mass. (AP) -- The trial of a Shirley man charged with killing his ex-girlfriend more than two years is expected to start this week.
The trial of 21-year-old Robert Gulla is scheduled to start Tuesday in Middlesex Superior Court following a meeting Monday between prosecutors and defense lawyers to discuss Gulla's mental health.
Gulla is accused of beating and stabbing 19-year-old Fitchburg State College student Allison Myrick of Groton in January 2010.
Myrick's family has said their relationship was abusive.
Gulla is charged with first-degree murder, assault and battery and violation of a restraining order
The Sun of Lowell reports that the defense is expected to argue that Gulla was mentally ill at the time of the slaying.
Prosecutors are likely focus on Gulla's planning and actions before and after the killing.
