MANCHESTER, NH (WHDH) -- On Friday, at about noon, a 2-year-old boy got away from his mother and was struck by a large truck near the intersection of Spruce Street and Union Street in Manchester.
The two year old Manchester boy sustained serious injuries in the accident and was immediately transported by ambulance to Elliot Hospital. He is currently listed in stable condition in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and is expected to survive.
The driver of the vehicle, a dumpster transport truck owned by Pinard Waste, was identified as 48-year-old Ricky Thornton of Manchester, NH.
Thornton was not injured in the accident.
The preliminary investigation indicated the child had been on a sidewalk on Spruce Street when he entered the travel portion of the roadway and was struck by the truck, traveling easterly on Spruce Street. The truck couldn't stop in time and struck the toddler. A neighbor said that the little boy was responsive, "He was crying, probably a little scared, shaken up. So was the mom.
New Hampshire state police tested the truck's brakes and found no other problems. The truck company said they are mostly just concerned about the well-being of the child. Police say the truck driver took it very hard and was very upset about the accident.
