EVERETT, Mass. (WHDH) -- Several people were forced from their home early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in Everett.

The fire broke out in a home on Godwin Place around midnight. Crews rushed to the scene to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby homes.

It wasn’t immediate known how much damage was done, but the fire left seven people without a home. All occupants made it out of the building, but police say, one resident was taken to Mass General to be treated for burns.

The fire appears to have started on the second floor of the building. At one point the smoke and flames were so heavy that all firefighters were ordered out of the building.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries, but was treated at the scene and is expected to be okay.

"Everything went well,” Deputy Chief Michael Ragucci said. “This fire had a little bit of a head-start on us, balloon frame construction, so we were a little bit behind the eight ball before we even started."

The Red Cross was being called to the scene Tuesday morning to help provide the home's residents with supplies and somewhere to stay.

Police and fire investigators still aren't sure exactly what started the fire.
