CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- People are turning to pools and beaches as high temperatures and humidity hangs over New Hampshire.

Gov. John Lynch and state public health emergency officials urged people on Tuesday to take the necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illness and injury. He asked residents to check on their neighbors, particularly senior citizens.

Temperatures reached the upper 90s in the lower half of the state, and the mid-80s up in the North Country.

Hampton Beach was crowded with people trying to keep cool. City pools in Nashua were being kept open another half-hour Tuesday, closing at 8:30 p.m. instead of 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service says the temperatures will start to go down on Wednesday.
