WINDHAM, N.H. (WHDH) -- There was a surprise in the sky in New Hampshire Wednesday as Marine One -- the president’s helicopter -- landed on a field outside Windham High School.
President Barack Obama is expected to visit New Hampshire this weekend -- that's not a secret -- but the early visit from the military was, and it was quite a shock for those who saw it happen.
Athletic teams were practicing on the field at Windham High School when four large helicopters dropped in. They were prepping for a presidential visit.
“All of a sudden these big helicopters are coming in and the first helicopters that came in had no labels or anything like that on it so nobody was quite sure what was going on,” said Patty Clinger.
Clinger said she had no clue what was happening at the high school around dinnertime when out of nowhere four helicopters landed on the athletic fields -- including two that are used to transport the president.
“We heard helicopters coming over the ridge,” said Mike Savastano. “Two came in and landed on the football field and soon after the two presidential helicopters came in.”
Most everyone knew the president is headed to the Granite State for a campaign visit on Saturday, but they didn’t know he was coming to Windham High.
“We were just doing our cheers over there and all of a sudden we saw two helicopters and they were getting lower and lower and we were like, ‘oh my God,’” said 9-year-old Mia Savastano.
“It was like seeing planes in the air show and it was fun,” said 6-year-old Katherine Klinger.
As fast as they arrived, the helicopters departed.
