UNDATED (WHDH) -- The following is a release from the Massachusetts State Police.
State Police Investigating Double Fatal Crash in Andover
Today at 5:07 p.m., Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Andover responded to a two- vehicle crash on Route 125 at Wildwood Road in Andover. The crash resulted in two fatalities.
A 72-year-old woman driving a 2004 Saturn Ion and her 82-year-old male passenger have been pronounced deceased. The operator of a 2010 Chevrolet pickup truck, John O’Donnell, 70, of Boxford, was driving northbound on Route 125 when the Saturn Ion pulled out from Wildwood Road to cross Route 125.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the pickup truck struck the Saturn in the driver’s side door, pushing the vehicle off the roadway. Both vehicles came to a rest off the northbound side of the roadway. The male passenger of the Saturn was transported by EMS to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The female operator was flown by medical helicopter to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, where she was later pronounced deceased. Their names will not be released tonight; State Police are in the process of making family notifications. O’Donnell did not suffer any injuries.
At the time of the investigation, State Police closed the northbound side of Route 125 to accommodate the crash investigation and reconstruction. Traffic was diverted around the crash scene onto local roads by the Andover Police Department. At 7:45 p.m. Route 125 was re-opened to all traffic.
The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Investigators are continuing to compile data to find a cause of the crash. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Andover Fire Department and the Department of Transportation Highway Division.
