LAWRENCE, Mass. (WHDH) -- Lawrence police are looking for a driver who hit a 6-year-old girl and then fled the scene.
The hit-and-run occurred at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The shocking incident was caught on a surveillance camera. The video shows the young girl running out from behind a parked car to meet her sisters on the opposite side of the road. The white Toyota Highlander was driving down the road, hit the girl, and did not stop.
“It just happened so quick...I just heard screaming and everything,” said the victim’s mother, Yahaira Guevara.
Guevara said they were visiting family on Easton Street in Lawrence when the car ran over her daughter’s legs.
“She actually slipped on the street and the car just passed by and the only thing he took was her legs. He stepped on her legs with the wheels. When that happened, one of the kids picked her up and put her on the sidewalk. That’s when I called 9-1-1,” said Guevara.
The surveillance footage shows that the car stops briefly before it drives away.
“It’s obvious to us that he knew he hit the person, the young child and then just basically drove away, at a high rate of speed mind you,” said John Romero, chief of the Lawrence Police Department.
Today, the young girl is still in pain. She has stitches in her foot, a chipped bone, and some very deep cuts and bruises on her legs and back. Her mother said is hurting both physically and emotionally.
“In the middle of the night she wakes up screaming and saying ouch,” said Guevara.
Guevara said she knows her daughter will be okay, but wants the driver to pay the price.
“The way he did it, he didn’t care...” said Guevara.
Police have a partial plate and are working with several different agencies to try to identify the driver.
