BOSTON (WHDH) -- Friends and classmates are trying to figure out what led to the mysterious death of a Dartmouth college grad student.

State police found the body of 24-year-old Mike Lomakin on I-91 early Saturday morning.

They believe he was run over by at least two cars.

As investigators look for the initial car that may have hit him, those who knew him are left grieving and wondering.

"I don't think any of us know like what the heck was he doing on the interstate. No one knows. I don't think,” said classmate Spencer Hatch.

"The faculty of course are shocked because it's almost like the students are our children and so it's difficult to deal with,” said Robert Caldwell, a professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College.

Lomakin was last seen at a small party Friday night.

He graduated from UMass Lowell and was recruited to pursue a Master’s in Physics at Dartmouth.
