PLUM ISLAND, Mass. (WHDH) -- Beach erosion is the main concern on Plum Island as Hurricane Sandy moves into the area on Monday.

Monster waves crashed the coast on Plum Island hour after hour Monday. Pounding waves and howling winds that were gusting close to 60 miles per hour.

“Those waves come with tremendous force and you know, I’ve seen things -- logs and other debris being hurled from the ocean,” said Chief Michael Reilly of the Newbury Police Department.

Police worked to keep curious onlookers off the island while homeowners opted to stay and ride out the storm.

After high tide roared in around 12 p.m. all eyes were on the beach erosion, but so far there hasn’t been a problem.
