SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WHDH) -- A local college student is in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital after being struck by a car in Somerville.
Police said a 21-year-old Tufts University student was struck and critically injured while crossing Powder House Boulevard at Packard Avenue Thursday night.
Students that spoke with 7News said they are careful, but don’t consider the area particularly dangerous for walkers.
“It’s definitely not really dangerous. Cars are pretty hesitant and conscientious,” said one man.
Police said they talked to the driver of the vehicle -- a mother with three children in her car. But police said they want to speak with anyone who saw the accident. They know of at least one witness who left the scene and possibly man others driving by.
“There are a lot of pieces of the puzzle we’re trying to put together. An important part is to talk to anyone who may have seen what happened just before or just after this accident. So we’re hoping those individuals who were in the area will call us and help us reconstruct the accident,” said Deputy Paul Upton of the Somerville Police Department.
Somerville police said they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.
