Woman sentenced in case of fatal Salem crash

SALEM, Mass. (WHDH) -- Family and friends of a Danvers teen killed in a car accident in June appeared in court Friday to attend the driver’s sentencing.

At around 4 a.m. on a Saturday in June, Angelique Griffin slammed into a flatbed tractor-trailer truck, killing the passenger of her car, Dillon Renard. The incident was caught on surveillance camera.

Griffin is charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence. She was sentenced to two and a half years in prison with a six-month home confinement.

"Judge, I would suggest that any sentence Miss. Griffin gets today, will not compare with what she is going to have to live with for the rest of her life," said Scott Dullea, defense attorney.

The victim’s family is outraged and calls the sentence too lenient.

"Life as we know it is very short. For Dillon, it hardly began," said Ronald Bovio, Renard's grandfather.

“She plowed out of that parking lot like a bat out of hell,” said one of the victim’s family members.

Another family member said, “They say speeding wasn’t a factor? Look at that car. Look at the outcome. We think there’s some cover up. It’s not right. He meant so much to us and it just seems like it’s all just being…”

“Swept under the rug,” said a family member, finishing the sentence of the woman beside her.

Family members hope to change Massachusetts law to increase mandatory minimum sentences in cases of vehicular homicide.
