WINDHAM, N.H. (WHDH) -- There are unconfirmed reports that the shooter in the Newtown, Conn. school massacre entered the building wearing body armor.
There is a company in Windham, N.H. that makes body armor that says the armor is for police, not civilians.
This has some people calling for background checks.
“I don’t believe that it’s necessary [for background checks for armor],” said Raymond Bellia of Granite State Police Supply. “It’s not a weapon. It’s an item to protect.”
Granite State Police Supply doesn’t do criminal background checks, but they do have questions for those buying armor and they said 95 percent of their clients are police or security officers.
Granite State sells pieces of body armor for $500 to $800.
“We’ve had people contact us to purchase armor for children. There’s backpack protection -- you slide it right inside your backpack. It’s universal fit and it’s something people could use to protect themselves,” said Bellia. “Another piece is a notebook protector.”
The owner of Granite State Police Supply does not recommend buying body armor for children.
