Man arrested after police chase through Lynn

LYNN, Mass. (WHDH) -- A man was arrested after a police chase through Lynn Wednesday.

Police said the chase ensued after a state trooper tried to pull the man over for a suspected narcotics violation. Instead of stopping, the suspect accelerated his car and attempted to run down the trooper. The trooper was knocked off his feet when Rosario drove away, but he wasn't seriously hurt.

Officers then gave chase to the suspect.

"Next thing I know, I see state police troopers coming in, the other car hitting another car," said Peter Pedro, a witness.

During the chase, the suspect -- who state police identified as Luis Rosario, 26 ,of Dorchester -- crashed into two other vehicles at the intersection of Boston and Franklin streets. The suspect then jumped out of his vehicle and got into the minivan of a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help the drivers of the two other crashed vehicles.

7News was told a state trooper was forced to discharge his firearm and shot two to three shots into the minivan the suspect was driving. State police said they chased the man until he abandoned the vehicle on Atkinson Street.

Police said the suspect got out of the minivan and ran to the next street where he was eventually apprehended.

The suspect had a gunshot wound to his left forearm. He was taken away from the scene by an ambulance.

"He was pinned against the cruiser in handcuffs with his forearm wrapped up tight, blood all over the shirt," said Ryan Beliveau, a witness.

Police said it was a dangerous ordeal because the suspect was armed.

"He repeatedly drove at cruisers, at a state trooper, and as you can see, entered this intersection with no regard for innocent civilians in this intersection," an official said. "So he most certainly was armed with a dangerous weapon -- a vehicle."

There was a heavy police presence in the area Wednesday night as police continued to investigate.
