Bone-numbing cold hits northern, eastern Maine

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- An Arctic air mass has driven down temperatures to well below zero across much of northern and eastern Maine with the wind chill falling to bone-numbing levels.

The National Weather Service says some of the cold spots early Wednesday morning included Frenchville, which recorded a minus-31 degree wind chill, and Houlton, where the wind chill came in at 23 below.

A wind chill advisory was in effect Wednesday morning for northern and eastern parts of the state.

The weather service says it'll probably issue another wind chill advisory Wednesday night into Thursday with temperatures bottoming out at minus-15 in the north and wind chills again approaching 30-below zero.
