MALDEN, Mass. (WHDH) -- Police are investigating a shooting after a 39-year-old man was shot and killed near a skateboarding shop on Main Street in Malden.
Malden police responded to shots fired near the 800 block of Main Street before 1 p.m. Tuesday.
People who live nearby said around seven shots rang out. Police said someone was shot, but aren’t providing any additional details.
“It’s just a terrible thing to happen. I live right down the street in Melrose. This is bad. It’s real sad news. It’s just too much happening everywhere. We have to put a stop to this,” said Ruthie Dreyfus, who lives in the area.
At this time it is unclear if the shooting happened inside or outside of the skateboarding shop.
Friends and family of Shawn Clark say he was a role model and mentor.
"It's clear that he really struck a cord with the youth here. He took a lot of these kids under his wing and really helped them do something good," Brian Clark said.
One man from Malden said violence in the city is only getting worse.
“The mayor just came into office, he’s trying to bring businesses into this town and he’s got bozos running around like this, creating issues, causing problems. I think this is the ninth shooting in Malden since August,” said Clark Heighton, who lives in the area.
"My heartfelt sympathies are with the family of the victim," said Mayor Gary Christenson. "State and local police along with the Middlesex District Attorney's office are working diligently to investigate the circumstances. We are going to continue to provide our Police Department with the resources they need to address criminal activity. With the addition of nine new officers, continued investments in surveillance camera technology, and our transition to a new Police Chief, we will intensify our efforts in crime prevention."
Malden police, state police and the district attorney’s office are investigating the shooting.
No arrests have been made.
