Fire breaks out at hotel, other buildings in NH
HAMPTON, N.H. -- A five-alarm fire broke out at a hotel and surrounding buildings in New Hampshire on Friday morning.
Winds up to 60 miles per hour fanned the flames as they ripped through the three-story Surf Hotel on Ocean Boulevard in Hampton. Over 150 firefighters from three states were called in to battle the blaze. [7NEWS Raw Video: Hampton fire]
Officials said the roof blew off the hotel in the storm and the building subsequently caught fire, which then spread to five neighboring buildings as part of an entire block of businesses.
Paul Anthony Cataldo was asleep in his hotel next to those five burning buildings when his alarm went off.
“I looked through the alleyway...and I could see the flames going,” Cataldo said.
Five buildings in all were destroyed, and the flames damaged eight to twelve other businesses in the area.
Residents and storeowners were shocked, but glad no one was hurt.
“Luckily, no one got hurt and the firefighters did a good job...we’ll have to rebuild, I guess,” said George Godin, a neighbor.
No injuries were reported. Fire officials believe the flames started on the first floor of the building, but have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
The flames caused well over $1 million in damage.
