BOURNE, Mass. (WHDH) -- A National Guard unit was activated in Bourne when Gov. Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency Friday.

“In this company we have all the horizontal heavy equipment so prepared to do snow moving, snow removal if we need to as well as watching the coastal flooding,” said Capt. Bill DesMarais of the Mass. National Guard.

As the first flakes of the big storm started falling, South Shore residents scrambled to get last minute supplies to ride out the blizzard of 2013.

The Hanover Mall closed at 2 p.m. Friday.

Close by tree trimmers contracted by National Grid stood by ready to deal with fallen trees and limbs that could bring down power lines.

Traffic on the roads on the south shore and Cape Cod dwindled as many adhered to Gov. Patrick’s executive order to stay off the roads after 4 p.m. Friday.
