CANTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- A man answered the front door of a Canton home and was shot in the neck.

The victim's girlfriend made a frantic call to police.

Officers responded to the Chapman Street home around 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Investigators said the 28-year-old victim opened the door to let the suspect in, but won't say if the two knew each other.

“He was summoned to the door. He opened the door late at night and was shot. There was a confrontation immediately,” said an official.

Investigators said the suspect fired only a single shot and never tried to enter the home.

Officers recovered the bullet, but conducted searches throughout the morning using canines to try and find more evidence.

Right now there's no motive for the shooting, but police insist people who live nearby shouldn't worry.

“Not gonna comment on what he's told us, but the neighbors and the town, I’m confident it was not a random act and that the victim was targeted,” said the official.

The man that owns the home said he rents the unit to a woman and her two children. People familiar with the area believe the boyfriend stays there occasionally.

The police are asking the public’s help trying to find the suspect and make an arrest.
