Teen arrested for allegedly assaulting classmate
MANSFIELD, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Mansfield High School junior was arrested after he allegedly assaulted another student in a locker room after gym class.
School officials notified police that a 17-year-old football player had attacked another student with a belt.
After a week-long investigation, Alexander Ruddy reported to the police station where he was arrested.
Ruddy and his family had no comment for 7News cameras, but an attorney spoke out on his behalf, calling the incident “…out of character…” and a “once in a lifetime mistake.”
According to his attorney, Ruddy has apologized and admitted to using the belt to hit a sophomore student after a verbal fight broke out during a gym class game of dodgeball.
“It should not be allowed. It’s a big concern for any parent. You send your kid to school and don't know what's going to happen,” said one parent.
Some think the arrest is a step that could help make schools a little safer. To others, it shows bad behavior getting worse.
“There was always a bit of horseplay but nothing like as far as assault…going to that extent,” one man said.
School officials say they hope other students will learn something from the incident.
