Hingham teen says man tried to grab her
HINGHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -- A 13-year-old girl said she was running alone when a man in a van tried to grab her.
She hid in the woods and waited for police to find her after she called 911.
“She did everything right. She was alert, aware of surroundings. She had her phone with her, she called 911. She actually stayed on the line until the first officer got there,” said Sgt. Steve Dearth.
Hingham police said the girl was out for a jog alone Wednesday night and she started to feel alarmed when she noticed a van following too closely.
“The van slowed down. The door opened and he reached out. He never fully stopped,” said Sgt. Dearth.
The girl told dispatchers the driver never got out of the car, but she believes he was trying to grab her before she took off.
“She screamed get away and then ran into the woods,” said Sgt. Dearth.
While police search for the driver, they want parents to take time to talk safety with their kids.
“Always watch out, always look over your shoulder,” said one mom.
“I think it happens anywhere. I think they target places where they think it’s quiet and residential. It’s easy to get in and get out. We’re right near the expressway too,” said another mother.
Police are now looking for a tan or yellow van. If you have any information, please call the Hingham Police Department.
