Semi-pro football player found dead in N. Attleboro
BOSTON (WHDH) -- The body of a semi-professional football player was found in an industrial area of North Attleboro Monday.
Police have not officially identified the victim as Odin Lloyd, but a family member told 7News police told them that the body found is 27-year-old Lloyd.
Lloyd’s family said they last saw him Sunday night, the day before the body was found in an industrial area in North Attleboro, which is about a mile from the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.
Llyod’s mother spoke on the steps of the Dorchester family home.
“My son is a wonderful child. He’s a family guy, he has not done anything to hurt anyone,” said his mother, Ursula Ward. “First and foremost I would like to thank the person that found my son. I would like to say God put him in the right place at the right time.”
Other families members grieved as well.
“He’s always had my back through anything and you know, it’s just tough that he’s not here,” said one family member.
“Great guy, that’s all I’ve got to say, he’s a great, great guy…awesome guy. Always happy,” said Keith Roy, a family friend of the victim. “[The family] is heartbroken…who wouldn’t be?”
Lloyd’s distraught friends and family struggled to make sense of the unfolding tragedy. Lloyd played semi-professional football for the Boston Bandits and had some connection with Hernandez, though family members didn’t say how well the two knew each other. They don’t recall ever seeing him in the neighborhood.
Lloyd’s coach said he was well liked and a great football player, but he has no idea what could have happened.
“He was one of those guys who always had a big smile on his face, kind of goofy sometimes at practice. Never had a beef with anybody on our team…a lot of the players were saying he was one of the nicest guys we had on the team, just because he got along with everybody,” said his coach, Olivier Bustin.
Family members said Lloyd lived in Dorchester with his mother and sisters. They said Lloyd grew up in Boston.
Police are questioning Hernandez in this case.
Lloyd’s stepfather said he will be going to identify the body Thursday.
The family is not making any connections between Lloyd and Hernandez and they said they have not heard from him.
