Woman dies after crashing car into Randolph pool
RANDOLPH, Mass. (WHDH) -- Police said a woman died after crashing her SUV through a fence and into a swimming pool on Wednesday.
The accident happened at the Highlight Glen condominiums. Police said the woman, 58, was parked in front of the pool before she drove through the fence and into the pool.
Vito Martello was in the pool area at the time and he jumped in the water to try and save her, but he struggled getting her out of the vehicle because she was wedged in after the airbag deployed. Witnesses said the woman’s window was partially open at the time of the accident.
“I keep pulling and pulling and pulling and finally she came free. I held back, head held here like this, and got her out of the water and said help, help, help me,” said Martello.
Police said the car was parked before the driver crashed into the pool at the Randolph condo complex.
The woman was taken to the hospital where she died.
Neighbors said the woman was known to have health issues, but was ready to move herself and her dog Willie to Florida to start over. She was all packed and ready to leave Thursday.
“It’s just such a shock to think she was so close to moving to a place she was looking forward to. She showed me the house. She loved the house. She couldn’t wait to get there,” said Mary Sheehan, the victim’s friend.
“I’m just in total shock right now. I lived two doors down from her and whenever she needed something she always came to me,” said Kim Mayberger, the victim’s friend.
When Martello found out later she died, he was devastated, after trying to hard to save her.
“I’m heartbroken she didn’t make it. Whole time I was praying she’d make it through,” he said.
Friends of the woman said she was moving to Florida on Thursday.
Police have not released the woman's name. They are still trying to contact her family. The woman's dog is now being taken care of by friends.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
