One dead after shootout in East Bridgewater
EAST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (WHDH) -- One man is dead after he was involved in a shootout with police in East Bridgewater.
Police have said they were responding to an armed robbery at CVS in Brockton when the suspect fled police leading them on a chase through Brockton, Whitman and into East Bridgewater.
The suspect was the only person injured during the shootout and he was later pronounced dead at Brockton Hospital.
During the chase, Massasoit Community College was on alert as state and local police raced by the school.
“There was no threat to the college community. We sent an alert to all of our staff and students to make sure that they knew this and our campus police blocked off the back entrance to the campus,” Laurie Maker said.
Residents of the neighborhood where the shootout occurred said they were worried for their families.
“It’s tough to hear because I have young children that live here. This is typically a quiet community,” Brian Barry said.
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said that during the chase, a state police detective assigned to his office fired his weapon and hit the suspect. He said an investigation of the shooting has been referred to the Cape and Island District Attorney's Office to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.
