WEYMOUTH, Mass. – A Weymouth firefighter says a startling discovery on his jacket could be a sign from his late brother.

Jason Farrar was on duty last Saturday night when the alarm sounded.

“I was a kind of hoping for a quiet night, said Farrar. “The call came in around twenty past two in the morning. There was no mistaking where we were going. It was a pretty good fire.”

After working the scene for hours, he came back tired and dirty. He hung up his gear and went home.

The next day, an image appeared on his jacket that stunned entire department and his family.

“The mouth, the nose, the eyes, the squared off chin but if you knew who my brother was, you'd look at that and say that was him,” Farrar said.

His brother: Sgt.Andrew Farrar, a Marine who died in Iraq.

“It was his 31st birthday that he was killed in Al Anbar Province in Iraq in 2005,” Farrar said.

Andrew Farrar left behind his wife and two children. To the entire family, which has dealt with such horrible loss, the image is a sign of comfort.

For Jason, it's like his big brother is still watching over him.

“I like to think he's with me every day, not just me but my family,” said Jason Farrar. “It was kind of cool seeing that.”

Jason is not a man prone to exaggeration.

“I can look at that and say that there is my brother's face,” said Jason Farrar. “I lived with him for 18 years.”

The image left by dirt and soot will not last forever; it's Jason's only jacket so he's not about to keep it off.

“People ask me, 'are you going to wear it again,'” said Jason. “I kind of think it's bad luck not to wear it again.”

Jason Farrar was at the fire academy when his older brother was killed. He said this was the biggest fire he's fought since graduating.
