MARSHFIELD, Mass -- Police were trying to determine the identity of the suspect in a deadly murder in Marshfield, Monday. The man had a fake I.D. and sources are saying the man is an illegal immigrant.

The suspect, Marcello Almeida, had given a fake Brazilian license three years ago when he was pulled over for speeding. Tuesday he faced murder charges.

The 41-year-old illegal immigrant was arrested Monday in connection with the fatal stabbing of his girl friend, 24-year-old Patricia Frios, at a Marshfield apartment complex.

Almeida had been stopped more than once on the South Shore and was cited for operating without a license.

“The suspect from yesterday’s stabbing, we dealt with in April of 2008 and November of 2008 for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. It is my understanding that the Scituate police department just dealt with him for the same type of crime,” Captain Phillip Tavares of the Marshfield Police said.

Investigators assigned to the District Attorney’s office spent hours at the apartment complex collecting evidence not long after Almeida was captured by police after a massive manhunt. He was taken to the hospital after he stabbed himself multiple times.

Tuesday, neighbors remembered the victim, the mother of a 5-year-old that lives in Brazil.

“She’s a wonderful person. She’s a very hard worker, she’s wonderful. You’re not supposed to do this to her,” a neighbor said.

While the investigation continues the Marshfield police said they never had any domestic dealings with the couple but add there is help for anyone that needs their assistance.

“Sometimes when you deal with people that are from different countries that are here illegally they are afraid to contact the police if they are victims of crimes and it doesn’t matter who you are, we’re here to help,” Captain Tavares said.

Immigration officials are assisting in the investigation as they try to determine Almeida’s true identity. In the meantime, he is still in a South Shore Hospital. It is unclear whether he’ll be arraigned on the charges Tuesday or sometime Wednesday.
