Blumenthal seeks safety probe of rental vehicles
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal has asked federal transportation officials to examine what he says could be insufficient federal oversight of rental vehicle safety.
The Democratic lawmaker acted in response to a fatal accident involving a rented U-Haul at a Harvard-Yale football game in New Haven on Nov. 19. A 30-year-old Massachusetts woman was killed and two others injured when the truck drove through a tailgating area.
Blumenthal wrote Transportation Secretary Raymond LaHood Monday that the accident has raised serious concerns about safety and reliability of rental trucks. He said no conclusions are possible about the cause of the accident, which is being investigated by New Haven police.
But he says the accident raises rental truck safety issues.
Representatives of the Department of Transportation and U-Haul did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
