Mayor blasted for 'taco' comment amid bias probe

HARTFORD, Conn. -- East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr.'s comment that he "might have tacos" amid the anti-bias probe into his town's police department has landed him a place in the national spotlight.
The 60-year-old Republican's comments to a New York television station Tuesday also are being blasted by Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, and Democrats in Maturo's hometown are calling on him to resign.
Maturo has apologized for what he calls a "dumb, off the cuff, stupid comment," and people who know him say he is not biased and believe he genuinely regrets saying it.
It came after the FBI arrested four East Haven officers Tuesday on charges of violating Latinos' rights with a pattern of harassment, intimidation and unequal treatment.
