Bouncer accused of sexually assaulting college student
NORTON, Mass. -- A bouncer at a Norton bar has been accused of sexually assaulting a Wheaton College student. The suspect was in court on Wednesday to face sexual assault charges.
Paul Panaikas, 38, was charged with allegedly raping a 21-year-old Wheaton College student. Although the victim told police she was sexually assaulted, Panaikas told police that the sex was consensual.
The alleged assault happened at the Sportsway Café on Main Street in Norton near the Wheaton College campus.
“She stated that he pushed her inside the closet, began kissing her and grabbing her,” said a prosecutor.
In court, the prosecution described how Panaikas wouldn’t let the alleged victim leave the bar, and how her friends tried to help her after becoming concerned.
“He went over to investigate. He stated that one of the other bouncers kind of blocked his path, so he went over with a couple of his friends and started banging on the door,” said a prosecutor.
The suspect, however, told a different story. He told police that the alleged victim had asked him if he “was interested in hooking up,” and that she went into the closet willingly.
Panaikas’ girlfriend said the allegations are false.
“He’s innocent,” said Panaikas’ girlfriend.
A public safety alert has been issued to Wheaton College students, which says in part:
“Our top priority is the safety of our students. We continue to urge students to be aware of their surroundings, both on and off campus.”
The safety alert worried students on campus.
“It was startling, just ‘cause you don’t want to think something like that could happen, especially in such a small town or such a small campus,” said a student.
The suspect has no record, and has served 19 years in the military. He is due back in court next month.
